Chalcedony is bluish-grey-white gemstone. It can be rather translucent, with a waxy look to it - varying to somewhat opaque. It usually is prefixed by the word "Blue" to distinguish it from the geologist's term "chalcedony" meaning a "cryptocrystalline quartz". The blue form is the best known version of this type of gemstone. The blue color of chalcedony is often (but not always) enhanced by heat treating.

Chalcedony seems very smooth and hard when polished, but it actually is microscopically porous, making it easy to dye. In fact, if you accidently splash coffee on your chalcedony pendant, it can stain the stone - so be sure to rinse any spills with lots of water immediately.

new product Here is an unusual choice in faceted oval beads: blue chalcedony strung in multi-tone strands. Most of the strand consists of the pale bluish beads, but each strand will have a few of the more intensely blue beads. This gemstone is not dyed, but it may be heat treated to achieve the darker blue color. Beads are hand shaped and faceted, but fairly uniform in size and shape. Beads are 9-11mm long and about 8mm wide, strung on strands that are 14 inches long.

Beads get their color from heat treating (not dye). Some times also called a lozenge rectangle, these beads vary in size from about 10x10mm to 16x15mm - but tend to be similar in size on an individual strand. Strands are about 15 inches in length.
